About Hardwood Flooring

When it comes to flooring, hardwood is an excellent choice. The elegance of a hardwood floor adds beauty and character to your home or business. There are a variety of species, colors and textures to choose. Colors range from reds, shades of brown, greys to modern white-washed finishes.

Types of hardwood flooring

Solid hardwood
Just as the name suggests, solid hardwood is cut from a single piece of timber. This type of flooring is popular due to its timeless beauty and durability. Typically ¾ inches thick, it is nailed to wood subfloors and cannot be installed directly on concrete slabs.

Engineered Hardwood
Engineered hardwood flooring has a layered structure and is more dimensionally stable than solid wood. It is composed of a top wear layer and then several layers of wood with alternating directions of the grain. These layers are heated and pressed together. The structure makes engineered flooring an excellent choice for use over radiant heating systems, concrete subfloors, and basements. It is also the better choice in Florida to resist cupping and gapping in our humid and hot climate.

Features of Hardwood
The features of hardwood fall into several categories, some of which are discussed below.

Species: Whether pine, oak, cherry, or another, the species chosen will depend on the specific area it will be used in. Both engineered and solid hardwood are available in a variety of species. Harder wood species like oak, hickory and Brazilian Cherry are more resistant to scratches and dents than softer species like cherry, birch and walnut.
Durability: Hardwood flooring has a remarkable lifespan. Hardwood floors may need to be sanded and refinished or chemically rescreened at times, however, this type of flooring can virtually last for generations.
Width: Basically, hardwood is available in strips, which are less than 3” wide; or planks, which are 3” or wider. This is a design feature that is dependent on the overall dimension of the area in which the hardwood is being used. More traditional homes make use of narrower styles while open floor plans are the perfect space for wider and longer boards.
